US space-funeral company plans to launch lunar cemetery

MIAMI (AFP) - - A US funeral business that specializes in launching cremated human remains into Earth's orbit has begun taking reservations for landing small capsules of ashes on the moon, announced the company's founder.

"Celestis' first general public lunar mission could occur as early as 2010 and reservations are now being taken," said Charles M. Chafer, Celestis founder and president, in an email to AFP.

"We can send up to 5000 individual capsules to the lunar surface," he said.

The company hopes to install a cemetery on the lunar surface to hold cremated remains of the dead, or a smaller symbolic portion of them, which one day could be visited by relatives of the deceased, said Chafer.

For transportation, Celestis has made deals with two other US private space companies, Odyssey Moon and Astrobotic Technology, which are currently working on making commercial flights to the moon.

For sending a tiny, one gram portion of cremated remains to the moon, the company charges 9,995 dollars, according to Celestis' website.

Other funeral services besides the full lunar trip include sending ash into Earth's orbit -- the cheapest option, starting at 700 dollars -- and all the way up to launching remains far, far away into deep space, for which the company charges more than 37,000 dollars.

The latter option is expected to be available from 2011, after the development of a special capsule to hold the remains, the company said.

Ten years ago NASA paid tribute to top US astronomer Eugene Shoemaker by carrying into space a portion of his cremated remains.

After a year in lunar orbit Shoemaker's remains were intentionally planted on the moon's south pole, the first time human remains have been landed on the lunar surface -- but maybe not the last time.

You know, I think this is so cool. When I die, I would want my remains to be sent up to space too.

I hereby recommand the show ELI STONE for everyone to watch. It is one of the greatest shows ever written. It is clever, witty and carries a deep message.

I know it's crazy! I am supposed to be having my A levels and here I am trying to sell a show to the people who patronise this stall. But, I guess... you could always use a good show every here and then.

Why do I recommand it?

1. I, for one, marvel at the directorial choices made. The editors are ingenious! Smooth transitions between the reality and the surreal. What else can you ask for? For someone so particular, I have to say the transitions are seamless. They are GREAT!

2. I enjoy the concepts for the show. Granted, a surreal/fantatiscal (I think surreal is a more appropriate word here as it is the exploration of one's mind but many online reviews use the word fantatiscal so I guess I should put it there too just for kicks) is not exactly a new idea. Just look at SIX FEET UNDER. But SIX FEET UNDER deals with death while ELI STONE deals with living things. Now, for me, that is more intriging as the show explores the theme of human relationship more intmately (as compared to SIX FEET UNDER where the exploration of the notion seems alienated as it is presented through living/non-living relationships).

3. The cast is great. The actor playing Jordan is Victor Garber. He also acted in ALIAS and GODSPELL. I admire him. I think he is a really convincing actor who is able to convey his emotions in a very controlled manner. That is something not many actors can do it. They either show too much emotions or too little or none at all. It is difficult to get it just right. Because of that, I think this show is worth a shot.

4. The great musical numbers. Haha.... There are many musical numbers in this show and what amazes me is that even though it is just for a few seconds/a minute, the directors go full out. One example: there is this scene where Eli has a vision of a tremor and his ex fiance breaks out into a song/dance. The whole scene was literally shaking with people in the background flinging themselves onto the floor or flying midway in the air. Normally, you would just expect lamps swinging or anything like that but this shows actually get a lot of people to execute a scene that will only take a few seconds of air time. Great commitment I would say.

5. Lastly, this show introduced me to George Michael. I am not a music junkie but this guy sings great! The pilot episode of the show introduces the audience to the song FAITH. Quoting a line from it, the gist of the song basically says 'Yes I've gotta have faith'. It is a great song. Go youtube it or whatever illegal/legal manner you will resort to and you will understand what I mean. Great song, great singer and a unique dancer. He jives and wiggles his legs in an odd fashion. As eccentric as it may be, it is rather cool to see it.

6. The interesting judges in the show. There is one who wants to be bribed, another who is extremely sarcastic and another who is selfish and doesn't want to die. Characterisation wise, though the judges are minor minor minor minor characters, they are nontheless fleshed out.

I think I have said/typed enough. I am supposed to be asleep (it is 3.35am here in the ninght/morning) and I think I am suffering from insomnia. Bad time huh. Okay, goodbye.

I typed this long entry because I had an inspiration and I wanted to tell the whole wide world about the show. Or maybe, subconsciously, I am practising for my upcoming Lit and Drama papers. Kudos to writing! I need to prepare a bandage and muscle cream for them.

Okay, got to go! GO AND WATCH ELI STONE!

I think the thing about A levels is: 10% of studying and 90% of panicking.

Not a very good combination in my own opinion.
